Droves Of Ghanaian Ladies Crazy For Short Haircuts



Scores of Ghanaian young ladies in recent times are gradually moving away from the usual permed hairs, wigs, and hair caps to the wearing of short, hot romantic and sexy haircuts, which radiates confidence and youthfulness.

The newly adopted short haircut trend according to scores of ladies’ interviewed by the GNA, at the Ministries, Mamprobi, Dansoman, Abelenkpe, Accra Newtown, East Legon, the campuses of University of Ghana and the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), said it has been tagged “Am still young,” or “Daavi”.

Most of them especially the students, explained that short haircuts are traditionally for men, but in recent times “it has become a preferred choice for many of us, it is easy to go, smart and less stressful in terms of management.

“Male counterparts also do appreciate their ladies more when they wear such hairdos because it makes them look younger, smashy and catchy”.

According to historical antiquity, Ewe older women mainly adorn short haircut style hence its name “Daavi” literally meaning “sister”.


Mrs Dinah Adotey, a hairstylist at Mamprobi told the GNA that, short haircuts for women are in vogue and trending in Ghana, because it saves time and is less expensive.

She said young women and mostly above 50 years are seen with short haircuts, because the haircuts look nice on women and most young ladies prefer that to the long hairstyles.

She said, “short haircuts were considered to be for older women who are fifty and above but our young ladies now see it as fashion and prefer that.”

She affirmed that the short haircuts save time as compared to the long hair styles, adding, “Most young ladies say they do not have time to go to the salon and cannot be in the dryer for long because they have other things to do.”

Mrs. Dinah Adotey said she had to convince some of her customers not to cut their hairs short, but some did not listen to her. They go to the barbering salon for a haircut because she doesn’t do hair cutting. Then they come back to her to apply a relaxer to their hair and style them.

She said, she was happy that at least, she doesn’t end up losing her customers entirely, because they still come to her for their hairstyles after the haircut.

However, she opined that a short haircut can be expensive if it has to look nice and presentable.

She told GNA that she a customer who goes for the haircut at a barbering salon and does the relaxing and styling by herself.

She said she uses a relaxer depending on the type of hair of the customer, washes then applies styling gel to bring out the curls.

Mr. Richard Commodore a barber at Mamprobi also confirmed to GNA that, in recent times most ladies’ troop into the barbering salon for short haircut leading to increase in demand for short haircuts.

He added that it takes lots of time and care to get a nice haircut for women. “You do not need to rush when cutting a woman’s hair because it is difficult to repair the damages done to her hair. So you have to take your time and give her a nice and befitting haircut”.

Mr. Commodore said, ladies now want to have “fading” hairstyle, the trend has increased the number of customers who patronizes the salon.

He affirmed that business was booming because the number of women who cut their hair have increased and anticipate that more ladies would join.

“Short haircuts have come to stay”.
