Agortime Kpetoe Launches 2025 Edition of Kente Festival

The Chiefs and People of Agortime Kpetoe have officially launched the 2025 edition of the Kente Festival, with a call on government, the private sector, and stakeholders to support the Kente weaving industry.

Such support would ensure sustainable job creation and preserve the culture of the area.

The launch, held in Aflao on Saturday, June 21, 2025, set the stage for the main celebration scheduled for August 10–17, 2025, under the theme: “Woven Together Kente; Agortime’s Creative Gift to the World.”

Dr. Dela Mawutor, a member of the Central Planning Committee for the festival, said this year’s celebration is focused on asserting Agortime Kpetoe’s rightful place as the origin of authentic Kente cloth.

She emphasised the importance of patenting the various unique designs and placing copyrights on them to protect the intellectual property of the weavers.

Dr. Mawutor noted that although the weaving industry holds great potential, many artisans struggle to access markets for their products.

“Kente should not only be a cultural symbol but a vehicle for economic empowerment,” she said, adding that initiatives like the National Apprenticeship Programme and the 24-Hour Economy Policy should be aligned with the needs of the Kente industry to support funding and market access.

Nene Akoto Sah VII the Warlord of Kpetoe on behalf of Nene Nuer Keteku IV the Konor of Agortime-Kpetoe stated that the festival was launched in Aflao deliberately to deepen regional collaboration, boost awareness and patronage of Kente in border towns and beyond.

He encouraged residents to support the weavers and participate fully in the main festival in August.

Mr. Nicholas Worclachie, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South, speaking on behalf of the Sector Minister and the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, applauded the decision to hold the launch in Aflao.

He emphasised the need for the festival to be promoted nationally and internationally to attract patrons from neighboring countries like Togo and Benin.

Mr. Charles Agbeve, MP for Agortime-Ziope, disclosed that the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture had informed him that Kente has been registered as a UNESCO cultural heritage item, placing it among the likes of the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles.

He expressed strong support for the copyrighting of Kente designs and called for a regulatory framework to ensure that all Kente products are properly labeled and traceable, so that weavers can benefit financially from their work.

He warned against the replication of Kente in foreign markets such as China, saying legal measures would be taken against such practices to protect the integrity of the fabric.

“May the beauty of our heritage — our Kente — continue to inspire generations to come. It is the heartbeat of our culture. Let’s preserve it with pride,” Mr. Agbeve said.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu said the festival’s launch in Aflao represents a spirit of unity between the Agortime and Aflao Traditional Areas, which is essential for regional development.

He reiterated that the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy aligns with promoting industries like Kente weaving, which provide employment and contribute to local revenue.

He also revealed that an international exhibition in Selangor, Malaysia, scheduled for October this year, will feature Kente.

e urged interested weavers to contact their MMDCEs to facilitate participation in showcasing their work on the global stage.

Togbui Adzonugaga Ameya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao and President of the Aflao Traditional Council, who chaired the launching ceremony, expressed his delight at hosting the event on Aflao soil—an achievement he attributed to the tireless efforts of Togbui Hezekiah I, also known as Apostle Jacob Henyo, the general oversee of The Voice of Miracle Prayer International.

He commended the growing unity between the Agortime and Aflao traditional areas, emphasising that such collaboration would strengthen bonds and foster mutual growth and development for their people.

The launch was attended by traditional leaders from both Agortime and Aflao Traditional Areas, government officials, cultural enthusiasts, and citizens from across the region.
