Bono Regional Hospital Morgue Choked As Families Await Lifting Of ‘Ban’ On Funerals

Authorities at the Bono Regional Hospital in Sunyani say their morgue can no longer receive bodies since it has reached its full capacity.

According to management, this is due to President Akufo-Addo’s ban on all public gatherings including funerals.

While announcing some directives to prevent a spread of coronavirus in Ghana, the President placed a ban on social gathering and called for social distancing in its place.

Although he exempted private burials, attendance was limited to 25 people.

He also announced the lockdown of Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi, including parts of the Central region and Tema.

But Authorities say this is having a negative impact on the facility.

According to them, families that are due to pick up the bodies of their relatives are now unwilling to come for the bodies for burial as they claim to be waiting for the ban by the President to be lifted.

Speaking to Adom News’ Christian Ofori Kumah, the Medical Director for the Regional Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Amponsah said the love for big gatherings by a cross-section of Ghanaians prevents them from organising a moderate funeral for their dead relative in the lockdown period.

He urged families to come for the bodies so the hospital can have space to admit more.

“The week before the lockdown, there were families scheduled to come for their dead relatives but they called it off. All funerals have been suspended.

“But people must know that others are dying from other sicknesses apart from Covid-19 and we would need to keep them at the morgue.

“If people don’t come for the ones that have been in our possession for long, we would have no other choice but to ask families to take their dead relatives home immediately they die,” he said.
