Three Guidelines To Make Your Jewellery Stand Out On Every Occasion

Wearing jewellery is one sure way to make a fashion statement no matter the occasion. It helps to enhance your features as well as bring life to an outfit and complete your look.

People may opt for various types of jewellery depending on their personal preferences and affordability.

Jewellery pieces are usually made from silver, gold, titanium, platinum, gemstones, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds or pearls.

The most common types of jewellery are worn as rings, watches, necklaces, bracelets earrings, pendants and brooches. Then there are the not so conventional ones like anklets, toe rings and other extreme piercings like tongue rings, nose rings, lips rings and many more.

Depending on your outfit and the occasion, several pieces can be put together to create a jaw-dropping look. But before you get excited and put them all on at once, here are three guidelines to make sure your jewellery stands out.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

A statement piece only makes its statement if it is allowed to stand alone without too much competition. It is important to wear one statement piece at a time, that is the golden rule to keep your fashion statement chic and on point. One beauty about statement jewellery is that it only takes one piece to make your whole look stand out. If your statement piece is a huge cocktail ring, keep bracelets and necklaces to a minimum.

Go for simple outfits in black or neutral tones so, and avoid patterns, sparkles or sequins, when wearing a bold or statement piece. Small or less busy pieces can work very well with patterned items of clothing, however, when wearing bright and detailed accessories try to stick to colour block or neutral items.

Layered chain necklaces can look extremely charming if worn correctly. Keep your look tasteful by making sure that you do not layer too many strands together and keep tabs on how much sparkle you layer on.

COORDINATE PIECES TO CREATE A COMPLETE LOOK

It is important to match up your entire look from jewellery to make up.

If you are going for a polished, prim and proper lady-like look, opt for pearls with a simple black dress or in a shade that does justice to the jewellery. A dangling earring will look great with a flowing maxi dress or an off-shoulder outfit with the hair pulled up into a chignon or a sleek ponytail.

If the earrings are brightly coloured it is best to wear simple makeup with the eyes highlighted.

For a feminine and romantic outfit, floral jewellery pieces will work the magic.

STRIKE A BALANCE

The key is to keep it simple and either work your outfit around one big eye-catching piece or to work well-coordinated statement accessories into your look by striking the right balance.

If you are wearing a belt avoid wearing long chain necklaces, as there will be too much going on around the same area. Wide chokers and bib necklaces can stand to be your sole statement piece, so let such items take centre stage and forgo other pieces of jewellery.

Remember that neutral colours such as black, white, cream, tan, plum or navy form the most attractive frame for most statement earring or necklace styles.

When wearing bangles, keep to a maximum of six at a time; and wear them on only one hand to keep the look fresh and interesting.

When a ring or bangle is your statement piece, take time and get a manicure since a lot of attention will be drawn to your hands. Make sure the colour of your nail polish does not conflict with that of the jewellery.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THEIR BEAUTY AND QUALITY

When not well taken care of, jewellery easily loses its beauty and quality and care must be taken to maintain them. Here’s how;

  • Apply your body lotions, cosmetics, perfume and hairspray before wearing your jewellery.
  • Wipe each with a clean soft cloth or cotton after use, to remove oils and sweat.
  • Wrap them separately in tissue or cotton and store in a fabric-lined jewellery box.
  • Some coloured gemstones should not be exposed to sudden temperature changes; know your pieces and their needs.
  • Have your expensive jewellery cleaned and checked by a professional at least yearly.
