WACSI, STAR-Ghana Advance Effort Of Stakeholders To Curb Covid-19
The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), in partnership with STAR-Ghana organized a Multi-Stakeholder Meeting to deliberate on COVID-19 responses in Ghana and charter a collective effort to curb the disease and its effect.
The meeting held virtually, witnessed participation from the government, private/ public sector, health sector and civil society also presented an opportunity for the various stakeholders to stay updated with other’s effort in response to Covid-19 and the various initiatives undertaken in the midst of the pandemic.
Discussions gave participants an understanding of the level of work done by the various organizations and also exposed opportunities to foster future collaborations geared towards Covid-19 fight.
In her opening remarks, Nana Asantewaa Afadzinu, Executive Director of WACSI, acknowledged individual efforts of the various stakeholders to fight the pandemic and its effects. She however, stressed on the need for a collaborative work among the various actors to further advance efforts.
In his submission, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Information laid down various government interventions undertaken since March 12, 2020 when the country recorded its first Covid-19 case.
“We took the opportunity to boost the pharmaceutical and textile industries by engaging them in the manufacturing of PPEs and face masks”
“Government also invested in healthcare to fight Covid-19 in the short term and in the long term to fight infectious diseases ,” he stated.
Speaking from the private sector point of view, Senyo Hosi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors ( CBOD), did not mince words on the negative impact of the pandemic on businesses. He was however, quick to point out slews of opportunities that the country can take advantage of.
“Although the private sector has been hit significantly and demand has gone down, there are many opportunities, ” Mr Hossi said.
“For entrepreneurs there’s a whole new opportunity that Covid-19 has opened up and depending on how we position ourselves as a country, may be a panacea for us to thrive and lead the economic space in West Africa,” he also said.
Dr Franklin Asiedu Bekoe of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), appealed for PPEs for health institutions and stressed on a sustained system of testing capacities.
He further mentioned that although there’s been an increase in Covid-19 treatment centers, they need to be well-equipped to ensure effective treatment.
The participants at the end of the meeting establish a commonality of purpose, identified potential areas of collaboration and devised strategies to ensure an effective Covid-19 response.
